The Hawaii Service Trip Program
of the Sierra Club, Hawaii Chapter

HSTP Report, Hawai`i Chapter Ex-comm, Sierra Club, August 1998

For the first time in a long time HSTP went through the summer without running a service trip. A planned service trip in early August toKalaupapa National Historic Park was canceled by the Park Service becausefilming of the Damien movie kept being extended later and later into thesummer and there would have been nowhere for HSTP folks to stay. We have re-scheduled that trip for the winter break.

We also are planning trips to Pu`u Wa`awa`a (Big Island, State Div. of Forestry), and W. Maui (Na Ala Hele), and `Iao Valley (The Nature Center). These will occur in spring break and summer of 1999.

The Pu`u Wa`awa`a trip would have happened this past summer but for the late arrival of the budget to State Forestry.

We have continued to sponsor hikes for young adult hikers. We are specifically trying to attract high schoolers who hike now in official high school hiking clubs. Once they start college (at UH or elsewhere) there arent as many organized hiking clubs available. In order to keep them interested in hiking (and hopefully in HSTP and the Chapter), we're trying to make sure that they have hikes to go on. These hikes have taken place once a month during 1998.

We have also started planning on-O`ahu service projects. Our initial talks have been with the Nature Conservancy. We hope to be able to run 3-4 3-day weekend trips per year to their on-O`ahu preserves, for trail building and maintenance, fence construction, and exotic plant control. These trips will be good practice for the young leaders that we are trying to groom for leadership duties on full-sized neighbor island trips.

We have also continued to sponsor a prize in the "Paradise Pursuits" contest - this year awarding scholarships to the service trip of their choice, to five students from Hilo high school.
