The Hawaii Service Trip Program sponsored a week long service trip to Pu'u Wa'awa'a (Hawai'i Island) to assist the State Department of Land and Natural Resources in the preservation and protection of this native dryland forest. Volunteers participated in the eradication of exotic weeds and outplanting of native plant species some of which are on the endangered species list. Participants learned about Hawaii's dryland forest ecosystem while at the same time contributing to efforts to preserve this special place. On the last day of the trip, the group hiked to the top of the forest bird sanctuary which offered amazing views of Hualalai, Mauna Kea, North Kona, Haleakala and the Kohala Mountains.
